FAQ about our sailing holidays with the POLARIS

Do I need sailing experience to take part in the sailing holidays?

No. Although sailing experience is an advantage, it is not a mandatory requirement for participating in our professionally guided sailing trips with the POLARIS. All work and manoeuvres can also be carried out exclusively by our two professional skippers on board. However, we will be happy to actively involve you in the sailing manoeuvres and cruise planning on request.

Do I need any driving licences or licences?

No. All the necessary certificates and licences are provided by our skippers and HS-Segelreisen GmbH. So you can concentrate fully on your trip and having fun. However, if you are in possession of certificates or licences, you are welcome to bring them with you.

What equipment is required?

Depending on the area and destination, it is advisable to have waterproof and warm oilskins and suitable functional underwear with you. The same applies to waterproof boots, sailing shoes, sailing gloves, a warm hat and ideally a headlamp with red and white light for night sailing. As far as footwear is concerned, you should choose shoes/boots with a light-coloured sole with a so-called razor-cut profile, and you can also find further tips and suggestions in our packing list.

What else belongs in the travel bag?

Space is always limited on a sailing yacht, even on our large POLARIS. That’s why less is often more. So don’t pack too much. Nobody will look at you funny if you wear the same T-shirt for two or three days, so as far as the bag itself is concerned, please only take soft bags (e.g. sports bags or duffle bags) that you can fold up small and stow away after unpacking. Large bags with extendable handles and wheels are rather unfavourable, as are trollies.

Do I have to take bed linen etc. with me?

It would be great if you could bring a fitted sheet 200 x 100 cm, a duvet cover 135 x 200 cm and a pillowcase 80 x 40 cm or 80 x 80 cm. A towel/bath towel would also be great. If this is not possible, we have bed linen and towels on board.

Do I need my own lifejacket?

No. We have professional and regularly serviced automatic lifejackets with integrated AIS transponders on board for all guests. However, if you prefer to bring your own waistcoat, that’s no problem.

I don't know if I'm seaworthy.

Our guests who are not yet experienced sailors usually don’t realise this. Seasickness can of course occur and be unpleasant, but it usually subsides quickly back in harbour. The susceptibility to seasickness also tends to decrease over the course of a voyage. Nevertheless, you should pack travel tablets or something similar to be prepared just in case. A good solution are the new plasters that you stick behind your ear and then release a calming agent into your body over the next few days. Just ask your pharmacist about this.

How does the catering work?

The catering on board is financed from the shared on-board funds. So before we set off on our cruise, we go shopping and pass on the costs to the on-board treasury and thus to all guests. The preparation of meals is then the responsibility of the crew, as is the subsequent cleaning up of the kitchen. Of course, there is also the option of eating out in the evening. These costs are also paid from the common on-board cash box.

What is the on-board cash box and what is paid from it?

The on-board cash box is topped up by all guests in equal parts to cover the costs of daily life. This includes Poviant, drinks, harbour fees, diesel and any evening meals. The main skipper does not pay into the on-board fund. His catering is therefore covered by the crew. For the second co-skipper, HS-Segelreisen pays the same share as all other guests into the on-board fund. Incidentally, the use of an app (Splid App) in which all crew members can enter their respective expenses is ideal in this respect. At the end of the trip, the app then quickly and easily calculates who still has to pay what or who still receives money back from the on-board cash box.

What additional costs are incurred?

In addition to the pure participation fee, there are costs for your own arrival and departure as well as the on-board cash. The costs for catering (including that of the main skipper), demurrage, diesel etc. are paid from the on-board funds. For the second co-skipper, HS-Segelreisen pays the same share as all other guests into the on-board fund.

How do I book a trip?

Nothing could be easier. Simply select the right offer on our website under ‘Dates and booking’ and then fill in all the fields on the registration pages. You can also select the type of accommodation there. We will then send you a booking confirmation and invoice for the tour you have chosen. After that, all that remains is to look forward to your very special trip.

How does the arrival and departure work?

You must organise your own travel to and from the port of departure or destination. Further information on the usual travel options in this respect can be found in the detailed description of the respective travel offer. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to help you.

What types of accommodation are available?

You have the choice between a total of 4 accommodation options. You can either opt for the very spacious owner’s cabin in the bow of our POLARIS, which has its own bathroom, or you can choose one of the two equally spacious aft cabins. In both cabin categories, you also have the choice of booking a single berth or the entire cabin for single use; please refer to the respective travel offer for more details.

Is there a shower and WC on board?

Naturally, our POLARIS has two spacious bathrooms with shower and WC. One of the two bathrooms is reserved for the occupants of the owner’s cabin in the bow of the POLARIS. For the rest of the crew, there is a large aft bathroom with standing height, electric toilet, washbasin and separate shower. Sufficient (hot) water is provided by our water maker and a redundant heating system with boiler.

Travelling alone or with a partner/friend?

Please note that if you book a complete cabin for use with an additional person, you will have to pay the single berth price twice and book accordingly. The prices for the sole use of a cabin are only valid for occupancy by one person.

Is there a programme like shore leave?

We at HS-Segelreisen take care of the realisation of the sailing trip and the nautical tasks involved. What happens afterwards on land or during any necessary harbour days can be decided and carried out independently by the crew. There is no specific framework programme in this respect. However, our skippers will be happy to provide you with advice and assistance in planning excursions etc.

What does the cruise route look like?

The expected itinerary can be found in the respective travel offer. It should of course be noted that the route actually chosen is planned and executed by our skippers depending on the prevailing weather conditions. Of course, we always endeavour to adhere to the plan as far as possible.

Can I use my mobile phone on board?

Of course. Provided you have network coverage, you can use your mobile phone either via your own mobile phone contract or our free, on-board GSM network.

Am I allowed to smoke on board?

Yes, but of course only on the deck of the ship and without disturbing other guests too much.

Do I need special insurance?

No. Normal personal liability insurance is usually sufficient for any damage caused. Everyone should have this nowadays.

Who are the skippers?

You can find out exactly who will be skippering your trip from the corresponding offer description. You can also find more information on the pages “About us” and “Our team”. Of course, in rare cases the skippers may have to be replaced due to cancellation etc.. However, as all our skippers are very experienced and friendly seamen, this should not be a problem.

What about safety on board?

All our ships are well maintained, regularly serviced and fully equipped with every conceivable safety feature. The regular inspection of the ships by the See-BG also ensures that all equipment requirements are met. So don’t worry. Your safety is very important to us.

Is there proof of the miles sailed?

No problem. Please simply contact us after the trip. We will then be happy to confirm the nautical miles travelled in the mileage book you brought with you. If you do not have your own mileage book, we will also be happy to confirm the miles on a separate form.

When exactly does the journey begin and end?

We will meet on board the POLARIS at 5 pm on the first day. We will let you know exactly where the berth will be shortly beforehand. As a rule, we will arrive at our destination harbour on the penultimate evening of the cruise. The ship must then be left by 9 a.m. the next morning after a final overnight stay.
