Kay Brokop

I learnt to sail on my parents’ dinghy, which was moored in various inland areas. When the boat became too small, I was able to continue sailing on a Neptun17. The provisional conclusion was the acquisition of the SBF-Binnen and the A licence.

This was followed by attempts with the surfboard and sailing was no longer possible as often due to fewer opportunities. Due to school and the subsequent studies, water sports did not come into play. It was only towards the end of my studies that I was encouraged to take part in a sailing weekend on dinghies in Holland and rediscovered the sport with its excellent recreational opportunities.

Sailing on larger boats and yachts was awakened by chartering flat-bottomed boats in Holland.

In order to be able to choose my own course, I enrolled in a club that also organised SKS lessons. In spring 2004, I passed the SKS on the club’s own yacht. This was followed by skipper and harbour manoeuvre training as well as ferry trips from Mallorca to Spain or from Greece to Italy.

In the following years, I chartered yachts and also travelled as co-skipper on training trips for SKS trips, later as skipper of SKS trips. Further licences such as SSS and SHS followed, as well as the SRC and the ISAF certificate.

I have been taking part in regattas since 2010, first as a crew and since I have been travelling on my own keel with my own boat.

My interest in marine technology came from working on the club yacht during winter storage. Through various trips on the club yacht, I was able to familiarise myself with the different areas in the Mediterranean. Before winter storage, the yacht was sailed to an easily accessible harbour, and I often took part in the transfer trips.

In addition to sailing and sailing trips, I am interested in computer technology and programming, and I have chosen road cycling as my sporting balance on land.
